John Wick(2014) - movie review

John wick(2014)
Rating: 3/5[a liberal reviewer]

I watched a trailer for John Wick-3 on Youtube and it said the best trilogy ever to be made. With interest piqued, I asked a couple of friends who watched it how it was. While one of them said it is a binge for action movie lovers the other hated the thin plot line. Well, i wanted to assess for myself how it felt and so here is my review..

John Wick is a legend of a sort in the crime underworld. He is touted as "a nightmare to boogeymen". Someone who is sent out to take care of such menaces as an assassin. He has killed three people only with a pencil. He has a reputation for never failing on a mission. We can see him in action through the movie as he goes killing his victims while looking them in the eye - savoring each drop of fear he is taking in. He is more effective wielding a weapon like gun or a knife than bare hand combat. They almost take him down twice. But his long time partner whom the villain engages to kill John turns his savior. But back into the past, he falls in love with a woman and decides to call it quits with the underworld. Become clean and live like a normal man with a normal life. But fate has other plans for him and his wife dies. She gives him a parting gift of a dog and he takes care of it as her last souvenir. One day, a bunch of thugs barge into his house to steal his car and they kill the dog. So he goes after the guy who killed his dog. Not the usual reaction to the misfortune that has befallen him. But perhaps he has been spoiling for a good hunt and kill. Old instincts die hard. It would have been comical for all the effort if Keanu Reeves didn't portray it with absolute seriousness and focus. The killer also happens to be his ex-boss's son and so starts the game where he is chasing after a gangster family. He loses his friend and ally who saves his life a couple of times in the plot. The villain is left within a hair's breadth distance from death and the story ends with John walking off with a rescue dog..his new companion in grieving "unalone".

The action sequences are food for those who love action video games like Vcop and GTA etc. Ruthless and quick in body movements, John is also sympathetic and vulnerable - traits that are not normally associated with an "assassin". Action movies all being alike - maybe except in budget and number or kind of stunts - this story is also novel in lacking a real thick plot. There is no real reason for him to have resumed his old lifestyle other than..maybe itching for it. He makes a case long enough for making a 2.5 hour movie out of it.
